Competition in Welwyn Village is fierce and The Wellington looks to lead the way
We arrived without a reservation on a busy Saturday evening and were told to expect a forty minute wait for a table. Although the restaurant is quite vast, all tables were full and there was a small waiting list, all of which was very encouraging.
We waited at the bar and perused the Wellington wine list. Wines come exclusively from D’Arenberg, an Australian producer from McLaren Vale. This arrangement may not be to everyone’s liking but we felt there was more than enough choice here. Our barman was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the wines and encouraged us to try some before we plumped for an Olive Grove Chardonnay. This was a delicious, classic chardonnay with buttery and oaky flavours and an excellent choice.
After thirty minutes we were shown to our table. There is a main menu at the Wellington with a large specials board. Regular main dishes include Beef and Guinness Pie , Bacon and Barbecue Chicken and Fish Pie. There is also a wide range of starter dishes and at lunchtimes, sandwiches and wraps appear on the menu.
To start we chose Grilled Potato Scallops with Gruyere Fondue and Jalapenos together with Duck Liver Pate with Pancetta. Food arrived in good time: The pate was delicious with a delightful coarse texture and the potatoes a good, if a little too filling choice. The gruyere fondue was a little mild but this was balanced perfectly by the spicy jalapenos.
From the large main course menu we chose Moroccan Lamb Skewers and Seared Marlin Steak with Sorrel Mash and Aioli. The lamb came on a bed of cous cous with halloumi and a flatbread. It was perfectly tender although we may have liked it to have been a little spicier. This was purely from the point of view of our own personal taste we should say.
The marlin was again cooked perfectly and was wonderfully moist. It was nicely complemented by the accompaniments although there wasn’t any particular hint of sorrel in the mash.
The Wellington menu suggests that you leave room for dessert and we would certainly echo this. All the dessert dishes are beautifully presented and are simply delicious. We chose a White Chocolate Cheesecake and a Vanilla Brulee with Raspberry Compote. Our only observation was that the compote didn’t have a particularly distinctive taste and didn’t really add anything to the brulee. Aside from this, our desserts were superb.
Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our visit to The Wellington: All staff were friendly and service was quick and attentive. Our bill, together with wine and a glass of sparkling mineral water came to £68.40 excluding service charge and we felt that this was excellent value for money. We would highly recommend the Wellington to all.
