Eden , Harpenden's hidden treasure

Eden describes itself as an Oriental restaurant and its various menus list a wide range of dishes from China, Japan and Thailand amongst others.

Eden has separate menus for lunchtime and evening and I was therefore presented with the lunch menu which contains a small but interesting cross section of dishes from all of their cuisines. At lunchtimes, Eden describes itself as a modern, Far East noodle bar, before transforming in the evening into a Peking, Szechuan and Cantonese restaurant.

Main dishes this particular lunchtime included Korean Marinated Chicken Udon at £6.00, Malaysian Seafood Lasak at £7.50 and Thai Seafood Tom Yum, also at £7.50. There is also a selection of noodle dishes ranging in price from £4.50 to £6.00 and rice dishes from £3.00 to £6.00. I chose a Japanese Chilli Beef Ramen at £7.50. Almost immediately, my waitress returned with my order of Japanese Asahi beer and a large basket of prawn crackers.

Food took a fair while to arrive and you may have to be patient, particularly if the restaurant is busy. However, it’s certainly sure to be worth waiting for. The chilli beef ramen was simply superb: Generous slices of beef are accompanied by ramen noodles, beansprouts, red chillies and red onions, all in a rich broth. Chopsticks are provided along with a wooden spoon so you don’t miss out on any of the liquid. This is certainly a fiery dish so be warned.

The sole waitress was friendly and polite throughout and this is a smart and comfortable restaurant in which to enjoy an excellent meal. My bill came to £10.40 excluding service charge which was excellent value. On this performance, Eden surely deserves to be much busier than it was today so I would urge you to call in as soon as possible.
