The Catherine Wheel at Albury
I hadn’t visited the Catherine Wheel prior to its devastating fire, so I had no pre-conceived ideas as to how I felt it should look. I was just happy that a pub had returned and it hadn’t been transformed into a block of flats called Catherine Wheel Court.
First impressions were good: The car park was full and the large bar and restaurant area was busy with drinkers and diners. Clearly The Catherine Wheel sees itself more as catering more for the restaurant trade and this is reflected in the menu and accompanying prices. Starter dishes included Soup of the Day at £4.95 and Crayfish with Gravadlax at £6.95. Main courses included Rack of Lamb with Burgundy Sauce and a Sea Bass Fillet, both at £15.50. The quality of the food is however commensurate with the price and later on, I was to have no complaints.
First it was time for a drink. Two ales were available in Deuchars and Breakspear’s and the Deuchars, at £2.60 a pint was in excellent condition. You can also try Staropramen, 1664, Fosters or Carlsberg and it’s always nice to see a different cider being served – in this case Westons Old Rosie at £2.60 a pint.
The wine list is also influenced by the restaurant side of the business. Twenty eight wines and four champagnes are available but only seven wines and one champagne are available by the glass. Bottle prices range from £9.50 for house wines up to £15.50 for a Fleurie and a Sancerre.
Turning back to the food, there is a range of specials which are priced somewhat lower than the main menu dishes and I ordered a chilli at £8.95. Food took around ten minutes to arrive and it was very good indeed. The chilli was nicely spiced – not insipid like most pub versions but not too hot either and quantity was very generous.
All around I was surrounded by happy diners and The Phoenix that is the new Catherine Wheel looks to be a success. Call in soon!
