The White Horse at Welwyn and its new restaurant!

We arrived on a cold, early spring Wednesday lunchtime to find the bar area full, and the restaurant forlornly empty. The restaurant itself looks pristine and welcoming but the appeal of the real fire in the bar seemed to have won this particular battle.

The White Horse always has a good choice of beers and today, ale lovers could have enjoyed Black Sheep, Deuchars or Sussex Gold from the Arundel brewery. Lager drinkers could opt for Fosters and it’s always good to see Leffe and Hoegaarden completing any bar line-up. We sampled the Deuchars which was a perfectly kept example of this excellent beer.

The White Horse’s wine list shows twelve wines, ranging in price from £12.00 to £21.00 per bottle. All wines are available by the glass with the average price for a 175ml glass being around £4.00.

The lunch menu was brief but there should be more than enough choice for all tastes and there is a separate specials board to go alongside it. Food tends to be of the traditional pub variety, however we did find some unusual dishes and chose Chicken Liver Pate with Toast and Onion Marmalade for starter course followed by Wild Mushroom Pappardelle with Stilton and Cherry Tomatoes.

Food arrived quickly, although for some reason the starter and main course both arrived at the same time. Aside from that, everything was very good indeed. The texture of the pate was smooth and creamy rather than thick and coarse and onion marmalade is just the perfect accompaniment to this dish.
The Pappardelle consisted of a good range of mushrooms and it the portion was very generous indeed. The volume of the dish told me that we should have sent it back when it arrived with the starter as it was a struggle to finish. I could detect no hint of stilton at all but the sauce was creamy and peppery and delicious alongside the mushrooms and pasta.

The total bill, with one pint of beer came to a shade over £18.00 which we felt was very good value for money. We would certainly recommend the White Horse and look forward to returning to a hopefully busy restaurant very soon.
