The Raj Gate at Hoddesdon
Unfussy and unhurried, The Raj Gate is about as traditional as an Indian restaurant can get these days.
We have been calling in here for over fifteen years and in that time, quality of food and quality of service has never diminished.
The interior is spacious enough to make the diner feel comfortable, however tables are not too far apart so a lively atmosphere can always be found when the restaurant is busy. When we dropped by, early on a Friday evening, we were the only customers aside from a steady stream of people ordering an early weekend takeaway.
The menu here is very comprehensive and we always feel spoiled for choice. The starter menu is full of old favourites such as samosas and bhajis that sit alongside the seldom ordered but especially wonderful Salmon Tikka.
Main dishes again tend towards the more traditional - dhansaks, vindaloos - all the expected curries are here and a small English menu is provided. This is something that seems to be dying out in Indian restaurants but it is considered vital if you have a wuss in your party.
We gorged ourselves on Chicken Tikka Madras, Prawn Dhansak, Vegetable Balti and a smorgasbord of side dishes. Our bill came to a shade under £40.00 which left us enough for accompanying lager and bus fare home.
As we see a move towards fancier, trendy Indians, The Raj Gate is a refreshing, no frills, but great quality alternative. Doubtless having said that, a complete refurbishment is now imminent!
