The Bull at Cottered

The Bull at Cottered

The diversity of the dishes is one of the things we really like about The Bull. Where else can you find a classic pub dish such as the humble jacket potato combined with a filling such as garlic mushrooms and feta cheese or a burger topped with full flavoured Roquefort cheese and horseradish?

Our latest trip to the Bull saw us arrive at precisely noon on a Friday lunchtime. Although we were the first to arrive, the pub quickly began to fill and some tables were already reserved. The pub is tied to Greene King and today just two ales were available in IPA and Abbott.

A choice of other beers is available and there are seven bottles of wine to choose from – three red, three white and one rose. Quality of beer and wine is very good but if you were being extremely critical, maybe there could be a little more choice, particularly when you consider the lengths that The Bull goes to with its food.

The menu at The Bull ranges from traditional pub dishes such as Liver and Bacon and Sausage and mash to classic meals with a twist as we’ve already seen. There is an additional specials board which includes a fish of the day and for today also included beef Wellington at £20.00 and fresh Devon Crab Salad at £10.50. These prices are considerably higher than the average price for a main meal, which is around the £9.00 mark.

Although greatly tempted by the crab salad, we eventually settled for the Burger with Roquefort and Horseradish and a Ham and Brie Salad. We sat to enjoy our drinks and The Bull’s relaxed atmosphere. The quiet dining area is contrasted by a livelier bar on the other side of the pub. A good size garden area is provided at the back. The Bull now seems to be actively promoting entertainment evenings and tribute acts seem to be the most popular at present so do call in to check these out.

Food arrived in good time. It’s difficult to recall anywhere in the county or beyond that provides quality in such quantity, i.e. the food is great and there’s loads of it! Our lunches were fabulous. The meat in the burger is thick and tender and the Roquefort is an unusual, but perfect topping. The ham was thickly carved and full of flavour and both plates were groaning under the weight of accompaniments.
Sadly there was no room here for dessert. It is our ambition to one day return for a full three course meal and to sample the lavish cheese board too!

Our meal with a pint and glass of wine came to £23.90. Seldom have we experienced a better meal for such a reasonable cost.
