The Ponsbourne Park Hotel nestles unobtrusively in Newgate Street village
Some mouth-watering starter dishes this evening included Ballotine of Monkfish with a Salmon and Sorrel Mousse, garnished with Dandelion, Bacon and Beetroot salad, as well as Rabbit, Pheasant and Duck Terrine. We opted for Cullen Skink Pannacotta and an Assiette of Shellfish.
The wine list at Ponsbourne is the most extensive that we’ve seen on our travels. You can view it in full on our website at www.hertsgrapevine.co.uk. For now we chose two glasses of house white – a classically oaky French Chardonnay.
Our starter dishes duly arrived: The Cullen Skink consisted of smoked haddock set in cream and was accompanied by a saffron and mustard potato salad. Subtly flavoured haddock was complimented perfectly by all the accompanying flavours. The overall smooth texture was wonderful.
The shellfish dish included scallop parfait, creamed lobster broth and a Thai crab spring roll. Each an individual delight and the whole proved to be a perfect starter.
Amongst the main courses were Sirloin Steak with Bourguignon Garnish and Bordelaise sauce and Breast of Gressingham Duck with Satsuma Tatin, Braised Caramelised Red Cabbage and a Spiced Plum Reduction. Here we chose Roast Rump of Lamb and an Assiette of Game.
The lamb came with winter greens, mulled wine jus and boudin noir. It was as tender as anyone could have wished for but the highlight was the mulled wine jus. An unexpected accompaniment maybe but the rich and spicy flavour was just perfect.
However the highlight of our meal just had to be the game dish. It consisted of venison tournedos with game pudding and pigeon. Each had the rich and gamey flavour that you would expect and some may be wary of a dish which may sound overpowering but it certainly wasn’t. It was indeed rich, but flavours were subtle and complimented each other perfectly. We decided right then to book for the following week and reserve the game once again!
We finished the evening with two divine desserts – an Apple and Cider Creme Brulee and a Cranberry and Orange Pudding with Egg Nog Cream. Our bill, including the wine and a bottle of sparkling mineral water came to £82.45 without service charge.
On the subject of service – it was perfect throughout. Genuinely friendly and attentive, it was the type that makes a meal a great experience.
Whatever your reasons for visiting Ponsbourne Park, whether you’re lucky enough to be staying in one of the sumptuous bedrooms, or attending a business conference, or if you’ve just called in for an evening meal, you can be sure of a warm welcome and superb facilities at this finest of hotels.
